American social behaviour is governed by an elaborate set of unwritten rules that I am still learning after twenty-eight years. Strangers may begin conversations without warning, shop assistants greet me with the enthusiasm of long-lost relatives, and ordinary exchanges can involve levels of friendliness, self-expression, and emotional disclosure that would cause the average Brit to retreat behind a newspaper.
