American domestic life can feel reassuringly familiar to a British immigrant—right up until it doesn’t. The houses are larger, the rules are different, the appliances appear capable of supporting a small commercial enterprise, and even the simplest household custom may conceal an entire philosophy of life. I have learned how most things work, but not always why they work that way.
